NJ Police Car
While we're on the subject of Police cars. Code One Custom Auto maintains a 1991
Chevrolet Police Patrol car.
Almost all of the Police cars used in films are replicas. Second Unit film crews use up
tens of thousands of dollars of a film's production budget filming vehicle scenes. Using
off-duty Police cars in a big city is not cost-effective. Most official Police vehicles,
especially patrol cars, which are operational, are in use in one way or another. Those
that are not are usually scheduled for maintenance or repairs. If a film was in progress
filming using real Police cars and they happened to be called to duty, production would
loose thousands by not being able to continue for the time that the cars were not
available. Similarly, if one day of shooting was accomplished using a real Police car that
was later damaged or destroyed, the scene or even FILM would have to be re-shot with
another car for continuity purposes. Conversely, most Police departments do not respond to
happily when their cars are destroyed by aliens or rampaging elephants. For these and many
other reasons, replicas are used. Many "picture car" companies in New York, like
Fox Picture Cars in Brooklyn and the Automobile Film Club of America in Staten Island
maintain entire fleets of Police cars, buses, taxis, and even firetrucks. Code One Custom
Auto acquired this 1991 Chevrolet Caprice from a New Jersey Police Auction with the decals
surprisingly intact. The car was damaged in many places and several of the panels had to
be replaced and some repainted. Most all of the accessories were removed as well as many
of the Chevrolet components that the Police department motor pool thought they could use.
This car has been returned to it's active duty look with the addition of a Federal Signal
Vector 3 light rack, Code 3 Pushbar, and many other lighting and interior Police
accessories. Plans are underway to change this vehicle from a New Jersey car to a New York
City car as the demand for these vehicles is greater across the river.
