Television has undeniably produced some of the most incredible cars ever dreamed up by
designers. Cars that capture the eye and stir the imagination. One of these eye-catchers
is the Cody Coyote from the 80's television series "Hardcastle and McCormick"
starring Brian Keith and Daniel Hugh-Kelly . This series about a retired car-thief teamed with
a retired Judge to avenge crimes that the Judge was unable to convict in his courtroom in
the past. This sleek looking supercar was built on a tubesteel chassis using VW
mechanicals. The body of the car is fiberglass and is designed on a modified Manta Montage
Kit car which in itself is a replica of the Mclaren MK 2.
5 of these low-slung flat racing cars were built for the series by George Barris
Customs and Jay Ohrberg Star Cars, including one constructed on a Delorean chassis with
Gull-wing doors. The story goes that Brian Keith became tired of stepping over the very
large door sills and in most cases the doors themselves to enter the car. He promised not
to return for a second season unless a new "hero" car was made that he could
more easily get in and out of. The producers complied. This particular car is now in the
hands of a collector in Iowa who has put the car up for sale on occasions. Another of the
cars found it's way to MGM Studios Florida where it sat for many years on display as part
of their backlot "junkpile". (Amusingly enough, MGM Studios Florida PURCHASED
that junkpile of cars from California moviecar builders just to have a
"junkpile" to display to visitors on the tour.) This stunt car was in a near
destroyed state when it was rescued by a fan of the series who purchased the shell of a
car from the studio for a mere ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. The present whereabouts of this stunt
car are unknown.
